Your first lookup
- Use a Mac running macOS 15 or later. Download Zhenzhu from the product page, open the disk image, and move the app to Applications.
- Open Zhenzhu and complete onboarding. Its controls live in the menu bar; it does not keep a permanent Dock icon.
- Select Chinese text in a supported app and use your configured lookup action. For text in an image or a paused video, use Snip to Translate.
- Inspect pinyin, definitions, and the sentence breakdown. Save useful words to local flashcards or configure the optional Anki integration.
Permissions and capture
Accessibility permission supports selected-text lookup. Screen Recording permission supports Snip to Translate and Hover Lookup. Manage these in macOS System Settings → Privacy & Security. Grant only the permissions needed for the features you use.
Selection lookup depends on what the source app exposes to macOS. If it cannot expose the text, use Snip to Translate or type or paste into Zhenzhu. Clipboard fallback is optional in Settings.
If lookup does not appear, check the configured trigger and excluded apps. If OCR is unavailable, check Screen Recording permission and your remaining monthly allowance.
Offline use and Anki
The dictionary, OCR, history, and local flashcards work on your Mac. Translation and speech depend on macOS language support and may need an initial download. First license activation, purchases, and updates require internet access.
Anki is optional. To use it, install Anki desktop and the AnkiConnect add-on, keep Anki open, and configure the integration in Zhenzhu Settings. Zhenzhu connects to Anki on your computer. You can also use the built-in flashcards without Anki.
Free and Pro
Free includes unlimited dictionary lookup, sentence translation, and speech; the latest 30 history entries; 30 local flashcards; and 10 OCR snips and 5 Anki exports per calendar month.
Pro 1 costs US$24.99 once and includes updates through Zhenzhu 1.x. Lifetime Updates costs US$49.99 once and includes future major updates. Both unlock the same Pro features and cover 3 Macs. Neither is a subscription.
Choose Pro in the app to open Lemon Squeezy checkout. After purchase, use the activation link or enter your license key in License Settings. If activation fails, email your order number and purchase email privately. Do not send your full license key.
