陈可带孩子们去看镇上的老地图。地图把雾河镇分成两个区：上河区在山坡上，下河区在河边。
上河区有镇政府、银行和新开的酒店。下河区在地图上只剩下一块灰色的地方。
“以前这里住的是什么人？”陈可问。
小雨说：“工人、商店老板，还有很多普通家庭。”
地图上有两条蓝线。北边的线绕过上河区，南边的线直接通向下河区。
阿明指着南边的线。“如果打开南门，水会先到哪里？”
没人回答。三个孩子站在地图前，第一次明白“下河街”不是一个普通的旧街道，而是一个被整个镇子放弃的地方。
当天晚上，陈可的父亲看见她拍的地图。他严厉地说：“以后不要再去档案室，也不要再问水坝的事。”
陈可问：“为什么？”
父亲只说：“因为有些答案会毁掉一个家庭。”
